Me: Nikita T. Mitchell

Since my parents gave me a name that’s far more common than you’d expect, I’m one of those annoying people who uses their middle initial. I’m a twenty-something born and raised in Maryland now living and working in DC. I started my career as a management consultant for a large professional services company, but in April of 2011 I finally made the transition into the social sector. Now I’m an Inspire Fellow working at a national organization focused on creating economic opportunity for underserved entrepreneurs.
I also serve on the board of the Cultural Academy for Excellence (CAFE), a youth arts-in-education program based out of Prince George’s County, and work as a hotline counselor and advocate for the DC Rape Crisis Center. As I’m sure you’ve guessed by now: I’m one of those naïve millenials you hear about who believes she can change the world (…crazy girl!).
I’m a proud Howard University graduate, an avid reader, an excessive tweeter, a lover of pink and a closeted introvert. I giggle at corny jokes. I’m full of suppressed wanderlust and have always had a desire to spend forever in school learning various subjects, one after the other. I love connecting people and sharing information. Most significantly, I’m at a crossroads in my life that’s both intimidating and exhilarating.
Like so many other twenty-somethings out there, I spend a lot of time thinking about my career path. I have lots of questions to which the answers, of course, remain elusive. I can tell you what I know, though: I enjoy my current job, I’m passionate about issues that affect young women and girls, and I am committed to working for change in my community.
It only took about a quarter century for me to make those discoveries. Let’s see what the next quarter century has in store…

This blog: Journeyful Life
My love for social media started freshman year in college when my roommate made me sign up for Facebook and we stayed up all night checking out people’s profiles. Since then I have spent most of my time online writing via my personal blog, sharing inspiration and excessively tweeting my random thoughts to the world. This blog, however, is different from anything else I’ve ever done. As a result, it is surely a work in progress.
With this blog I chronicle my own journey toward aligning my skillset, interests and passions to effect change. In doing so, I seek to also provide engaging and insightful posts on various topics related to professional development, social media, non-profits, personal branding, volunteering and more.
I believe that there is always something that anyone can do from anywhere to effect change. It doesn’t matter what sector you work in, what your skillsets are or where your passions lie. I hope that this blog will resonate with the “choir” as well as help others see that if you are committed to working toward a greater good then it’s always the right time to make a difference and there is always a way.
